Cambodian and Thai generals have agreed to a ceasefire, after the two armies exchanged shots along their disputed border on Friday night and Saturday morning.

To defuse tensions, military commanders from both sides held a meeting on Saturday afternoon. They agreed to halt the artillery exchanges, not bring in more troops, and work to prevent future clashes. The two sides also discussed the need to stop building structures in the area, and said their joint border committee needs to speed up the demarcation process. Cambodia also agreed to release four Thai soldiers captured during skirmishes around the ancient Preah Vihear Temple. The boundary between the neighbors has never been completely settled, and the ancient worship site has been a flash-point for decades.

Gen Srey Dey, Royal Cambodian Army, said, "The Thai general promised that they will respect the agreement, but if they don't, then we will fight, because we will exercise our right to defend our territory."
