"Rickshaw Boy" ("Luotuo Xiangzi" in pinyin) is a novel written by Chinese author, Lao She, in Qingdao 70 years ago. The story about a fictional Beijing rickshaw man is considered a classic of 20th-century Chinese literature.

Seventy years later, a museum named after this classic was officially opened in Qingdao, the first museum in China named after a classic novel.

The museum (駱駝祥子博物館) is inside the former residence of Lao She at 12 Huangxian Road, South District, Qingdao. In 1934, Lao She moved his family from Jinan to Qingdao and started teaching at Shandong University. He lived there until 1937.

In 1936, he finished his masterpiece which was translated into 40 languages and widely distributed around the world.

The repairs and renovations to the museum will maintain its original style, reproducing the appearance of Lao She’s former residence in the 1930s.

According to the museum curator, the former residence is a three-story building occupying 1,000 square meters.

The Rickshaw Boy Museum is on the first floor. It is divided into several rooms with copies of books, creative-work rooms and audio-visual rooms reflecting the life of Lao She in Qingdao. The second floor and the attic on the third floor were opened for cultural exchange and activities.

The statue of Lao She along with a statue of Rickshaw Boy was installed in the center of the courtyard. A series of pictures of Rickshaw Boy were carved on the walls of the courtyard, showing the works of Lao She and life of Xiangzi. The roadmap of Xiangzi’s daily work made by Shu Yi, son of Lao She, is of high academic value.
