The United States is projected to win the most medals in the 2012 Olympic Games, according to a virtual medal table that USA Today launched on Tuesday.

USA Today has partnered with Infostrada Sports to update the medal tracker, which uses an algorithm to project rankings.

The tracker put the United States first with 88 medals ahead of China's 84.

In the 2008 Games, the United States topped the medal standings with 110, followed by China with 100. For the first time since 1992, the Americans didn't win the most gold medals in a Summer Games, losing to China 51-36.
