A proposal to make way for subway construction in Nanjing, the capital of East China's Jiangsu province, calls for 303 trees to be removed and replanted, jschina.com.cn reported Thursday.

Under the plan, which was formed by a city government special working group, the City Government station of the Line 3 subway will be constructed in a park. That would inevitably force some trees in the park to be transplanted.

The proposed park location won the plurality of votes over four other proposals. The plan will be submitted to the city government for discussion.

If approved, the trees will be temporarily moved to the Xuanwu district. However, for the affected metasequoia, Chinese white poplar and cedar trees, the move could be ill-timed. It is the middle of the trees’ growing season. The survival of the trees could not be guaranteed.

Officials assigned numbers to the trees and carried out measurements. That will ensure the trees are planted with their roots facing the same direction in their new locations.

The panel of voters included eight civilian representatives of environmental evaluation who expressed their understanding and acceptance of the plan.
