An environmental organization claims that the huge volume of greenhouse gas created by the wildfires in Russia could speed up global warming.

World Wildlife Fund ecologists said Tuesday that the peat bogs and forest fires that produce carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were responsible for the climate change.

Scientists believe that the burned forests would release more carbon dioxide than they could absorb for up to 30 years.

Quick reforestation is impossible without artificial afforestation, said Nikolai Shmatkov, WWF Russia's forest policy coordinator.
