Taiwan Scholars Criticize Push for Referendum

Scholars in Taiwan are criticizing the Democratic Progressive Party for its demands for a referendum on amending the so-called "constitution." This is seen as paving the way for the island's independence as well as a way to garner support ahead of next year's leadership elections. The scholars include Liang Surong, director of the Strait Peaceful Reunification Association. They say the referendum would be a precursor for a vote on the status of Taiwan. They also warn that Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's push for independence will bring disaster to the island.
