école Fran?aise d' Extrême-Orient
école Fran?aise d' Extrême-Orient (EFEO), formerly known as the French Indochina Archaeological Survey Committee, was established in 1898 and renamed in 1900. Specializing in the study of the classical civilizations of Asia, EFEO has established 18 liaison centers in various countries and regions across Asia.
In the early 20th Century, Paul Pelliot, a member of EFEO from 1899 to 1911, brought back vast quantities of ancient texts from Dunhuang, which are housed in the National Library of France and Guimet Museum. These Dunhuang collections provide new materials for the study of medieval Chinese history, Chinese Buddhism, the Sinicization of Buddhism, and medieval Buddhist art.
These materials have attracted French scholars for decades and guided sinology in France. Many distinguished scholars who have played key roles in Dunhuang studies have worked at EFEO. Cooperation between EFEO and the Dunhuang Academy has continued for over 20 years, offering important support for Dunhuang researchers to access materials in France and enhance their academic abilities through regular exchanges and scientific collaboration.
