Chinese shares closed down midday Thursday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index falling 0.52 percent, or 15.67 points, to 2,988.17 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index dropped 0.70 percent, or 86.11 points, to 12,176.45 points.
